Art in the Region

In the exhibition series Art in the Region the municipality of Steinfurt has been presenting contemporary art in all its facets since 1988, giving artists from the region a professional forum. It enables an art-loving public a yearly opportunity to inform themselves about the region’s artistic trends, subject matter and perspectives. Since the opening of the DA, Kunsthaus Kloster Gravenhorst, the exhibition has taken place in the exciting spaces of the former Cistercian convent.

The basis for participating in the application procedure is formed by the ‘Guidelines to the Exhibition Art in the Region’ of 1 April 2012. Accordingly, applications are only permitted from artists over eighteen who live in the region or were born there. In keeping with the open European idea, the region encompasses the entire Münsterland, the Euregio area with the bordering Netherlands, and the Osnabrücker Land. An annually changing jury, with the involvement of the Kunstakademie Münster or the ArtEZ Enschede/Hengelo, representatives of regional cultural institutions and a cultural institution/art academy outside the region, selects from original works those which in their critical opinion posses ‘originality, authenticity and artistic quality’. The aim of the exhibition is to provide an insight into the multifaceted assertive power of visual art and to give rise to an interesting dialogue between artists and viewers.

Through annual purchases from this exhibition the municipality of Steinfurt has built up a fascinating and varied collection of regional creativity that is permanently exhibited in the town halls of Steinfurt and Tecklenburg.
